It was nice to see Mike Farmer in the audience, who reviewed the gig for ‘Bebop Spoken Here’.

“The room was full of jazz fans looking forward to the long awaited return of the hugely popular Dean Masser who has been absent through illness but has bounced back and seems to have made a full recovery. Dean has always had a big sound on tenor sax but tonight it seemed even bigger than usual especially in the lower register. Dean has played many gigs with the rhythm section of Hughes, Baranek, and Harrison and I’m sure he was well pleased with the backing they provided. They did a first class job and tonight it got me back to thinking back to nights at the Montmartre in Copenhagen listening to Dexter Gordon with the Kenny Drew Trio.”

Dean Masser Quartet Jazz at The Railway 9th April 2023 Dean always sounds great but tonight he excelled himself and if I were asked to pick out any highlights it would be a hard task as I liked all of the ten numbers he played. He always draws a good crowd and even before a note had been heard the music room was overflowing with eager jazz fans. The rhythm section was a particularly strong one being driven along by drummer Gaz Hughes who recently played here on April 2 with the Dean Stockdale Quartet. I thought this was the ideal group of musicians to interpret Dean’s music and right from the opening number On Green Dolphin Street they were operating at a level of high intensity. This was certainly the place to be for anyone wanting to hear some exciting modern jazz and my message to Dean is come back soon. -Mike Farmer, Bebop Spoken Here
