Since graduating from the City of Leeds College of Music as Saxophone Prizewinner, Dean Masser has established himself as a leading jazz saxophonist and educator. He made his first recording with the legendary Jack Parnell Quartet (Live at Ronnie Scott’s) in 1992, and has been featured on many albums since (Georgina Jackson, the Pete Long Orchestra, Alan Barnes Octet etc.) He recorded his first album as leader, Old School, in 2010. He won the public vote in the 2019 British Jazz Awards (tenor saxophone category) and was placed fifth overall.
Dean has performed on national TV and radio on numerous occasions, and in addition to his small group work he has performed in the Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Orchestra, Echoes of Ellington, BBC Radio Big Band, Syd Lawrence Orchestra and the Manchester Concert Orchestra, to name a few.
As an educator, Dean has held workshops across the UK with small groups and many of the country’s youth jazz orchestras. He has taught in schools and colleges and his private students come from as far afield as the US, Australia, Canada and Hong Kong in addition to his roster of UK students. Dean has also written and recorded an interactive duet book, “Swinging Saxophone Duets.”
